Why Sharing the Gospel Through Social Media Is Important

In this day and age, we are surrounded by social media outlets, websites, and apps. Nearly everyone we know has a smartphone or tablet, or at the very least a computer in their home. We have come a long way from black and white television, to now having computer systems on our wrists like the Apple Watch!

As times change and we advance in technology, our relationships and the ways we interact with people change as well. Social platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have exploded in popularity in just the last decade. For some of us in the “Millennial” generation, we couldn’t imagine living without these social outlets. For those who are in the “Baby Boomer” generation may think “I would love to live without them!” However, we can’t deny their importance and impact they have on our daily lives.

I once read that “Social Media is the New Town Square.” Until social media came around, town squares were shopping malls, parks, and restaurants… however, the new gathering places are Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc.
Check out some of these incredible statistics of just Facebook alone:
Worldwide, there are over 1.86 billion monthly active Facebook users
There are 1.74 billion mobile active users
Photo uploads total 300 million per day.
Average time spent per Facebook visit is 20 minutes.
Every 60 seconds on Facebook: 510,000 comments are posted, 293,000 statuses are updated, and 136,000 photos are uploaded.
One in five webpage views in the United States occurs on Facebook.

If those aren’t unbelievable statistics for one singular entity, I don't know what are! I think it’s safe to say that with having over 1.86 billion monthly active visitors to one location… there’s quite a large audience to be reached! I find this to be a critical piece of technology to utilize to share the most important message we’ll ever hear… the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I like to look at social media as something similar to that of Jesus’ parables. He used parables to reach the people of His time with the truth of everlasting life, so we need to use what will reach the people of our time with that very same truth. What better way to share the gospel than to get into the culture, into the daily lives of everyone around us, with the message of Jesus Christ?

An interesting statistic from our own church here at Kindred shows what “Sharing” does on Facebook. Take for instance, our Main Easter Celebration Service: we didn’t pay to have it boosted (advertise it through a campaign to reach more people) but instead, we had just 37 shares from people who saw it. Through those 37 shares, our livestream has been viewed over 2,100 times. From these 2,100 views, it reached 5,198 people in just 38 hours and a lifetime total, so far, of 7,427 people reached. That means that through a simple click of a button, nearly 7,500 people had a chance to see and hear the Gospel of Jesus be proclaimed! This is truly an amazing outlet for sharing the good news of Jesus Christ to our friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and so many more!

One thing I want to leave you with is a question and a challenge. My question is: if we knew a bus was flying down the street and was about to hit someone, would we not run and warn them? If we had a megaphone to let a group of people know, would we not use it?
My challenge is this: make an effort to use every single outlet you have to share the good news of the gospel with everyone you can! One way I recommend is using social media such as Facebook and Instagram, try sharing one of Kindred’s posts. Or, make your own post by quoting something from the sermon that really stuck out to you!

Have fun with it, and enjoy sharing the greatest news anyone will ever hear!

God Bless!

Hi Daniel,
Sorry for the late response on this! It's been a huge blessing knowing that while we may not see the work, the seed is definitely being sowed. God's work is at hand in so many ways! Thanks for sharing!

I love sharing Kindreds quotes and scripture. The background pictures are really nice and it keeps me from having to add my own. Thanks Chris for this article. It makes me want to stay relevant to today's culture yet intentional with the gospel to make a difference. I pray for all our brothers and sisters to take advantage of the opportunities on social media to not just share family pics, silly videos, selfies, etc. but to share things of spiritual value. We have great avenues and it takes little effort.

I have done this for a while and it's amazing that though I might not see firsthand The Lords working I know his word doesn't comeback void. Sowing the seed brother expecting The Lord to bring the increase.
