What Just Happened

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ…
Ephesians 1:3

I once read about a man whose name was mistakenly printed in the obituary column of the local newspaper. As you can imagine no one likes to wake up in the morning, and find out that they are already dead. Livid the man called up the newspaper, and demanded to talk to the editor. Put through to the editor the man proceeded to give the newspaperman a large piece of his mind. He talked of the shock of reading of his own demise, and the embarrassment it caused him in the community among friends and family. The editor apologized profusely, but the man could not be calmed down. Eventually the editor said, "Look, cheer up mister, tomorrow I will put your name in the birth column, and you can have a fresh start on life."

The Bible tells us this is what happens to us when we put our trust in Christ for salvation; we pass from death into life (John 5:24; Eph. 2:1). What a life changing moment when we begin to experience, and enjoy the hope of eternal life. But that is just one of the many things that happens to us at the moment of our conversion to Christ! When you and I confess our sin, and total dependence upon Christ for salvation, God immediately dumps a truckload of spiritual blessings on us (Eph. 1:3). 1. We are reconciled to God through Christ (2 Cor. 5:18). 2. We are delivered from the rule of darkness, and transferred into the kingdom of God's dear Son (Col. 1:13). 3. We are given total access to God through Jesus (Eph. 2:18). 4. We are conferred with a citizenship from heaven (Phil. 3:20). 5. We are made free from the law (Rom. 7:4). 6. We are given the right to become the children of God (John 1:12-13). 7. We are sealed with the earnest of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13-14). 8. We are made complete in Christ (Col. 2:10). 9. We are brought into vital union with the Trinity (1 Thess. 1:1; John 14:20; Rom. 8:9). 10. We are forgiven the debt of our sin (Col. 2:13). 11. We are adopted into the family of God, and the household of faith (Eph. 2:19). 12. We become part of a chosen generation (1 Peter 2:9). 13. We are made a priest unto God (1 Peter 2:5). 14. We are declared righteous before God (Rom. 3:28; 5:1). 15. We are set apart, and sanctified unto God (Heb. 10:10). 16. We are glorified (Rom. 8:30). 17. We are made a new creature in Christ with a new nature (2 Cor. 5:17). 18. We are made a gift from God to Christ (John 17:6). 19. We enjoy an unfading inheritance (1 Peter 1:4). 20. We are shown to be one of the elect of God (Eph. 1:4; Rom. 8:29). 21. We are recipients of God's forever love (Rom. 5:5; 8:31-39).

The day we came to Christ was a wonderful, wonderful day, a day we should never forget. It was a day when so many good things happened to us all at once. Blessings that continue to enrich our lives, and hold the hope of even greater joys!
